We have two of them at the bottom of this page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the most common questions I get asked are &#8220;<strong>what type of battery wire do you use to build the cables?<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>What size cable should I use for my vehicle?<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are some descriptions of what we use, information on the gauges of wire and when to use it, and some other technical charts to use.&nbsp; I&#8217;ll even give you my opinion about if you should be using <strong>marine-grade wire<\/strong> on your Dodge Dart&#8230;..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re wondering whether to use a 2\/0 battery cable or 1\/0 we&#8217;ll give you the data you need to decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be sure to watch the <strong>video at the bottom of the page<\/strong>. And we&#8217;ll show you how we build cables for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-66fa4692 gb-headline-text\">Different Types of Battery Wire and Uses:<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-36fa5f5e\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-0af318dd\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-0af318dd\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-b0c8da25 gb-headline-text\">SGT Battery Cable:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We generally use SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) SGT battery cable.&nbsp; SGT designates the type of insulation.&nbsp; (Wire is rated by several characteristics but most commonly its insulation type.&nbsp; For example &#8216;THHN&#8221; is probably what you have for the wiring in your house.&nbsp; THHN&nbsp;stands for &#8220;<strong>T<\/strong>hermoplastic&nbsp;<strong>H<\/strong>igh&nbsp;<strong>H<\/strong>eat-resistant&nbsp;<strong>N<\/strong>ylon-coated). SGT is a thermoplastic PVC (polyvinyl chloride) insulation rated at 50 volts. It&#8217;s typically rated for 85 or 105 degrees C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It usually has a fairly low strand count (meaning the strands are larger), making the wire stiff enough to stay where you put it but is still flexible enough to bend around tight corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"\/product-tag\/sgt\/\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">Buy SGT Battery Cable<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-d1c09069\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-d1c09069\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-6f4b9d5e gb-headline-text\">SGX Battery Cable:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes we use SGX battery cable. SGX uses a high-grade XLP (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) insulation which has a higher temperature rating and is more abrasion-resistant. The trade-off is the insulation is thicker and stiffer.&nbsp; Often it has a higher strand count.&nbsp;If you need a higher temp rating, it&#8217;s a good choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"\/product-tag\/sgx\/\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">Buy SGX Battery Cable<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-8a8d54e2\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-8a8d54e2\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-897cdf7a gb-headline-text\">Marine Battery Cable:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several types of &#8220;Marine&#8221; wire. It&#8217;s usually rated for higher temperatures and &#8220;wet&#8221; (think submerged) applications. It also has a requirement that it must be &#8220;self-extinguishing&#8221;. The marine rating is a Coast Guard legal requirement for marine applications.&nbsp; <strong>Do not build a cable intended for marine use out of wire that does not have a marine rating.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the SGT we sell also carry a marine rating (BC-2 rating)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"\/product-tag\/marine\/\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">Buy Marine Products<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-b4d6a411\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-b4d6a411\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-2507b6ab gb-headline-text\">Fuse Link or Fusible Link:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of a fuse link as a very slow-acting (&#8220;slow-blow&#8221;) fuse that looks like a piece of wire.&nbsp; Fuse link wire has special very high-temp insulation that won&#8217;t burn even if the wire becomes so hot that it fuses open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its most common use is in alternator wires. It protects the electrical system from a catastrophic failure of the alternator diodes.&nbsp; Without the fuse link, the alternator wire would melt or burn, possibly starting an underhood fire.&nbsp; Other common applications are the wires going to glow plug or intake grid heater relays on diesel engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s usually a 6 to 9-inch piece two wire sizes smaller than the wire it is protecting. For example, a 4 gauge wire would use a piece of 8 gauge fuse link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"\/product-tag\/fuse\/\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">Buy Fuse Link Wire<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-3f05ef54\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-3f05ef54\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-6671734b gb-headline-text\">OFC (Oxygen Free Copper):<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OFC (Oxygen Free Copper) wire often gets sold by stereo shops to hook up speakers or a high-power amp. Don&#8217;t waste your money. This stuff is just another way for slick salesmen to get more of your hard-earned money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s different about it? Standard wire is AT LEAST 99.90% pure copper.\u00a0 OFC is 99.95% copper.\u00a0 \u00a0An extra 0.05% copper sounds ok; what\u2019s the downside?\u00a0\u00a0COST.\u00a0 OFC is often more expensive for the same size as standard cable. So you pay more for NO measurable electric difference (source <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxygen-free_copper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/strong>).  The OFC that I have inspected does NOT show that it meets automotive specifications.  To make matters worse, I have heard reports of Chinese OFC being undersized for a given wire size.  Stick with good quality SAE approved wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-559af9fd gb-headline-text\">CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum):<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just say &#8220;no&#8221;.&nbsp;Copper clad is nothing more than copper-plated aluminum.&nbsp; Aluminum has 60% the conductivity of copper so a CCA wire will need to be roughly 2 sizes larger to have the same conductivity.&nbsp; In other words, a CCA wire would need to be 2 gauge to do the work of a 6 ga copper.&nbsp;Just buy copper wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more info see <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxygen-free_copper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-82171019\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-82171019\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-8d2ac556 gb-headline-text\">Summary:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For automotive cables, use SAE-rated SGT or SGX battery cable. It works great for automotive applications at a fair price. Do NOT use welding cable, OFC or CCA for underhood applications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For boats, you must use &#8220;marine&#8221; rated wire.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-03138a5c gb-headline-text\">What Gauge or Size Cable do I need?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-0f53be4b\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-b59ff225\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-b59ff225\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-bdae0cde gb-headline-text\">GoBig.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recommend building cables larger than stock.&nbsp; The manufacturers make stock battery cables as small as possible that barely get the job done. Going up a size or two is worth it in the long run because they do work better and last longer.&nbsp; Isn&#8217;t that what you want for your car or truck?
